I've been actually job hunting (like a good boy <g>) over the past several days. Just before this little burst of looking at the classifieds and monster.com, I decided that I was going to attend SXSW Interactive again this year. It has been two or three years since I last attended and I decided it was time. Whatever job I have by then will just have to accept that I'll not be at work during the week of Spring Break (SXSW's normal week to occupy). I wonder if they or the Austin Convention Center will have a wireless network set up. I think I heard about one existing last year, so there is hope for this year. :)

In other news, last night I finally burned a copy of the Sim City 3000 ISO that I've had on my file server for six or so months. I was going to a friend's house and it had been requested. Shortly after my arrival there were two new cities being created. I wonder if I'll get as addicted to this version as I did to the original? :)

Now that I've moved my entries written while at Big Bend off the laptop, I have an update on the wireless at the lodge there. As I'd expected, the network was much more sane during the daytime, which leads me to believe that some device(s) were off over night causing the things I was interpreting as odd. I watched the network as we checked out and saw what may be credit card number going by, though I don't have a way to verify that. They didn't have names or card expiration dates nearby.

Anyway, I should go pay my rent and get ready to see the second Lord of the Rings movie with a couple of friends. Have a happy new year.

So I'm currently sitting between the old and new office buildings of the Chisos Mountains Lodge in Big Bend National Park. Both building are in use as office space, so their 802.11b wireless network seems appropriate. They aren't using WEP at all and appear to not have Internet access as I'd previously guessed. I am saving all the packet capture I see to disk so I can examine it in more detail later. There are a few odd things going on; and I think I understand enough to know why they're happening. :-)

I've currently been capturing for about 15 minutes and am hoping to see something more than just these oddities. Since they don't have WEP enabled I'd like to know if they have any sensitive information going around on the air. If they do I can let them know that at least enabling WEP would be a good idea when we check out tomorrow morning.

As we checked in at the Chisos Mountains Lodge in Big Bend National Park a couple of evenings ago, I noticed what appeared to be an 802.11b wireless network signal strength meter on the Windows machine being used to record our presence.

Yesterday it rained a bit in the Chisos basin, during which a couple of us had been out walking (and getting wet). On our way back to the room, we detoured by the checkin office and gift store. As we left I noticed a digital satellite dish, so I'm wondering if the lodge has satellite-based Internet access and a wireless network to distribute it between their machines (so as to not have to run CAT-5 Ethernet cable). I'll find out later. :-)

I'm sitting in Big Bend National Park in the cabin we have this year. If you make your reservations early enough, you can get space in one of the cabins instead of in the lodge proper (which is much more motel-like).

I noticed a couple of amusing things during the drive... As we left Fort Stockton heading south to Marathon and then to the park, there were what appeared to be phone lines attached to someone's pasture fence. That is, attached to every third or every fourth fence post was an extension that went up a foot or two and had two wires with insulators attached. I noticed only because of the insulators. :-) Gates and other special features in the fence line were of course handled slightly differently.

And I've not been able to remember the other interesting thing I was going to write about...

(Friday, December 20th, 2002)

Yesterday evening while driving around town (to see a movie and take a friend to his "layover" before he leaves town for the holidays), I found the moon quite nice to just watch. I first noticed it as light coming in the top of my car (through the sunroof/moonroof (I still don't know for sure what the difference is)). I looked up and then back at the road and then looked up again. The moon is still visible out my window as I write this, despite the start of sunrise. It made me smile.

In other news... I'm doing OK talking to the now ex-bf online and on the phone but I don't yet know about seeing him in person. We agreed to work to retain friendship, both knowing that it would start out more difficult for me. I'm not back to getting excited about things in life, though I am somewhat back to wanting to see movies and so forth. This latter bit will take more time and is related to / caused by / whatever-phrase-is-more-appropriate-that-I-can't-think-of more than the relationship. As I periodically job hunt (in the crappy Austin job market), I keep wondering what other that computer / IT / Internet related work I'd be interested in doing. To an extent, I'm trying to figure out if I should chose to change direction, which way do I go.

So, I am again single. (As of about 04:00 AM CST on Friday morning.) It turns out I was the rebound boy. I fell in love and he never really moved past friendship. So depending on what I'm doing I'm in and out of sad/depressive states. It hurts. And I want to continue to be a friend of his. Though it'll be a while before I can talk to him and not quickly return to the sad/depressed state. I'm a bit pre-emptively jealous and at the same time wish him happiness. I wasn't originally angry at him for letting me be his rebound, but I am a bit at the moment. For the first two months I knew him we were taking things slowly because he was recently out of a relationship and because he stated that he wasn't ready for another. I figured incorrectly, two to two and a half months later when I again tried to move things further, that his acceptance indicated readiness. I see that such was not the case. Of the people I've dated seriously (five), this and one other hurt like this. I think the other hurt a bit less for more time and this one will hurt more, seemingly for less time. But it has only been two and a half days, so the verdict is still out.

I was at the book store this evening because the boyfriend wanted to get a book on PHP, Apache, and MySQL. While there and browsing the technology books section I decided to browse their Perl selection. I found a book covering Mason. I read through it a bit and was interested enough to buy it. (Yay for O'Reilly books.) It appears that I'll soon be re-doing my web site(s) with Mason. :)

While I was reading about Mason and browsing other sites online, I ran across this link. Go read it. :) You'll find it amusing......really.

(Monday, November 25th, 2002)

In a recent entry I mentioned that I'd been considering a job hunt. A bit after writing that my outlook on things had improved. :) Then on the 15th of November I was laid off from work. They decided that their income and outlay numbers were too close so I and our sales guy were let go. Now I really do get to find a new job. While the job market isn't great, I do have some backup funds available, so I'm not worried.

In fact, I'm at home today because I'm spending money on the car. It is getting a new clutch (after 98,500 miles on the first one) and has recently gotten new tires. It should be all set to go to Houston later this week for Thanksgiving.

There is one good thing about being jobless... I have time to work on projects that I'd been putting off. There are times when I think a part time or half time job would work better for me than full time because then I wouldn't necessarily always get home from work and not feel like doing anything requiring thought on the computer. Anyway, one of these projects is some code to generate fake bounce email messages to send back in response to some of the spam that I get. Not all spam has the necessary data to be able to send a bounce to a place where it might actually matter (i.e. someone sending spam that actually cares about having a list without bad addresses in it). I figure this is better than following the remove instructions in most cases, because you never know when "remove" is really "address verification." When I get bouncegen.pl more tested and polished it'll probably show up on the code page.

And now a bit more on what has had me busy... For a little over a month now, I've again been in a relationship. :-) He's tall, blond, cute, and also a geek (and he's about four feet in front of me doing something on his machine). Before things turned towards us being boyfriends, he and I had been hanging out as friends three to five times a week (sometimes late into the night) for about two months. So if you're curious and want to know more, bug me however you usually do so. :)

In other news, I've been contemplating a job hunt off and on for the past week or two.
