Whee...first entry of 2005. I have a list of things to write about or note,
but have an anecdote from yesterday evening instead. I was reminded of a
nice thing about Austin. I was sitting at Zen on South Congress reading and eating
when Leslie walked in. One of the people on shift greeted him by name. None
of the patrons found this at all odd. Now, for this to be cool/amusing, you
have to know about Leslie. :-) For those of you in Austin, this
will make sense. For those of you who aren't and/or who don't know, I'll let
you research or ask.
Also, I have finally been making interface improvements to the photo
galleries. They should finally be online soon. Really...

I'm still awake (from Friday) and at Mojo's finishing up a couple of
mini-projects. I recently bought USB 2.0 hardware for my laptop and one of
the desktop systems at home. With that and a ~$20 multi-format flash reader
I can grab photos from the camera's CF card much more quickly (all my other
methods for reading said CF card are USB 1.1). And speaking of photos, I was at Mt. Bonnell again semi-recently. I
posted
a couple of my favorites from that photos shoot to a LiveJournal community. Enjoy!
And yes, UI improvements to the photos section of this website are still in
progress. Though I have decided to add a view with EXIF data and back/forward
links. That way you can navigate based on whichever thumbnails you like or want
to see, or you can move through a gallery sequentially. This will appear when
the choose-your-gallery-based-on-description stuff appears.

I have several friends who are currently rather unhappy with each other over
how an old situation ended. I know it isn't fun. I know there was disrespect
on various sides. However, from what I can tell, things will not get better
until you are all adults about it and communicate (no matter how
difficult/annoying that is). Until there is communication things will stay at
the current stalemate, or so it would appear to me anyway. You could even
involve a moderator or two or three if that'll help.

So the photo galleries are online finally. I have some
further ideas in my head (and have had some suggestions) for ways to improve the
interface, so it should get better. In the meantime enjoy.
And, as I was driving home this evening, I saw all of the stoplights on Guadalupe
from 26th to 21st on yellow blink. This may be a change from the earlier light
programming (as done by the city), but the amusing thing to me was that all the
yellow lights in that stretch are still using bulbs instead of LED arrays. If
I remember correctly, the red and green are all LED arrays in that area. I wonder
why the city chose to leave yellow that way (as other areas already have yellow
converted over to LEDs)? Mostly it was nifty to see all the bulbs building up
to full brightness, then fading quickly out, and back again, which I now very rarely
see elsewhere in Austin.
And now, sleep for me.

I keep becoming curious enough to consider reading email that isn't mine,
though no matter how much I joke about being a BOFH, I consider myself to
be ethical, and won't.
In other news, a story I referenced in my previous entry has further
developments. "Share and enjoy!"

I have two quick links that I've been meaning to pass on for the past week.
The first is another bit
about electronic voting, this time in Florida. The second is regarding
free
speech at the DNC, which I know many other people have mentioned before.
Such a "nifty" country, this is, at times.
On another note, photo galleries are still in progress... (Yes, I know I've
been saying that for a while now, but they will get done.)
Finally, you might check out the second TMBG site at which
you can download copies of most (all?) of their recent live shows and several
of their albums. (I just grabbed the Austin show from July 16, 2004.)

Whee... I appear to write a lot of entries on Mondays. Anyway...
I did decide on a digital camera, and ended up with the Nikon D70. I'm spoiled
already. To those who have asked me (if you actually read this), I still have
not gotten things finished enough to have the new photo galleries online. I
have started and figured out what I did wrong in the initial design, so I can
do things better. :)
I have also been to the conference in New York City and then to Maine. Lots of
photos from said trip are in the queue. I had fun. We made fun of quel, as is wont to happen
when aramith is
around. We also looked like tourists for at least one day, so all is well with
the world.
I am currently at Mojo's (go figure) with several friends. I'm not typing as
well as I like to. And I'm boy-watching. Is anyone surprised by this?
:)
And now we have random link time... OK, not so random, since this arrived in
my email inbox at work earlier today in the Wired News summary. I was amused by
what Wired chose as a story topic. That
said, I don't think the issue is at all silly, and I'm not a big fan of
circumcision. But I should stop here, so I don't get into the land of "too
much information."
A sidenote... Sometimes I feel like I don't write very well... Though I know
that part of the reason tonight is that I'm not putting as much time in as I
should. Anyway, back to my regularly scheduled computing...

I just read the daily Wired News and came
across this
article about the recent Supreme
Court decision on when a person must give their name to Police. Suffice
it to say that I agree with the privacy advocates. I think the decision goes
too far and that we should be able to withhold our names in, at the least,
cases like those prompting the recent court case. To top it off, I'm annoyed
that terrorism was used as an argument for forced name divulging.

I'm sitting at Mojo's again, though about to head home to sleep. I've made
some progress on things. The QOS rules for Mojo's are decent now, in my
opinion. Latency during heavy uploading and downloading does still rise, but
it stays just about as reasonable as I'm going to be able to get it without
overly limiting throughput. It is currently just under the 384kbit/sec SDSL's
capabilities. Now I can focus more on a similar setup for my house and for
ISA. At ISA I get to plan for
slightly more types of traffic, including IPsec and VOIP, though VOIP isn't
actively being used yet.
Also at ISA, I need to finalize, with my manager, plans for newer backup
hardware. I think we'll keep the tape drive we have, but the two servers that
currently hold backup data will get upgraded for more speed and storage. And,
likely, LVM. Yay
filesystem snapshots!
I also got mostly caught up on email this evening, and made no progress on
actually using my new home file server. And, after consideration, I got a
beard trimmer. No, I'm not planning to actually have a beard, but it will let
me more quickly keep my facial hair under control. I'm thinking at the worst
I'll usually have stubble. :)
Finally, over the next few days I get to debate whether or not I should buy a
digital SLR before my trip to NYC and Maine...

One more note... They Might Be Giants will
be performing at Stubb's on July
16th. Tickets are available from Front Gate Tickets.
