To work for a small to medium sized company which is involved with and using open source [1] and/or free software [2], where I can learn new skills and technologies and face new challenges, and that has an open working environment.

Work Experience

November 3, 2008 - Present: Tier III Data Center Support for Hostway Corporation [3]. One member of the team running two 24/7 data centers in Austin, Texas. Involved in customer support via phone and ticket system, as well as server build, configuration, and installation. Also responsible for installation, configuration, and suport of firewalls, VPNs, and load balancers. Assist with support and maintenance of internal systems, and help plan and carry out infrastructure migrations for key customers. Hardware involved: Dell PowerEdge servers, Cisco ASA series appliances, and Foundry, HP ProCurve, and Dell PowerConnect switches. Software involved: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, RedHat Enterprise Linux, Debian GNU/Linux, CentOS Linux, Ubuntu, OpenBSD, iptables, pf, keepalived, Parallels Plesk, Apache, and MySQL.

May 25, 2003 - July 27, 2007: Network and Systems Administrator for International Studies Abroad (ISA) [4]. Duties involved administering and supporting sixteen remote Linux servers around the world as well as thirteen more and related network and SAN gear at ISA's headquarters in Austin, Texas. Also, supported thirty-five or so local users and assisted with support of users in overseas offices. Software involved is Windows XP and 2000 (in English and Spanish), a replicated LDAP directory, IPsec VPNs, IMAP and web-based email, and custom database driven websites on Apache.

January 22, 2002 - November 15, 2002: Network and Systems Engineer for Mach 10 Hosting. One of a team of two in charge of about 180 customer machines for Mach 10's hosting and co-location business. Duties involved Intel-x86 based system builds and installs; network design, buildout, and maintenance; e-mail and DNS setup and maintenance; Apache web server configuration; custom software installation; MySQL database configuration; all manner of troubleshooting software and hardware; and direct customer support.

October 2, 2000 - May 11, 2001: Test Technician for Dell [5] in the Linux Systems Group. Employed through Spherion [6] to test Red Hat [7] Linux [8] on Dell's PowerEdge server hardware. Ran various system and stress tests on shipping hardware and software as well as on pre-production hardware and pre-release software. Assisted other groups within Dell with Linux questions and issues. Found and documented problems and assisted engineers with development of solutions and/or workarounds. Testing and other work covered Dell's complete server line - one to eight CPUs and 128 MB to 64 GB of RAM on Intel IA-32 (x86) and IA-64 (Itanium) architectures. Also covered were 3Com and Intel 10/100 and Gigabit Ethernet NICs in their fiber and copper varieties.

June 1, 2000 - September 29, 2000: Network Systems Administrator at Travis High School (Austin ISD) [9]. Responsibilities include maintaining the Netware 5 server and NDS tree; maintaining Windows based workstations and network-delivered images of said workstations (via Altiris' ImageBlaster product); maintaining the Linux based firewall/router/web-cache server; and maintaining Ethernet network infrastructure. Also add and modify software that is delivered to workstations using Novell's Z.E.N.Works product. Work with an Apple engineer to develop a desktop security, system restoration, and software delivery model for Travis' Mac OS based machines.

July 1999 - May 2003: Senior Network Analyst for Texas Information Services (TxIS) [10]. Duties include maintaining Linux based web, mail, ftp, and DNS servers; registering domains; adding domains to said servers; doing customer support. Wrote curriculum for and taught Linux firewall training class, and did client site support, maintenance, and setup of Linux servers. Built, upgraded, and maintained Intel and AMD based computers both for TxIS itself and for clients. Also configured and maintained Cisco and Pipeline (T1 and ISDN) routers for Internet access and for WAN/MAN connectivity. This varied over time from full time consulting (originally) to occasional weekend work (currently).

September 1996 - May 1999: Technology Assistant at Austin High School (Austin ISD) [11]. Installed and maintained hardware, software configurations, and networks. Assisted in administration of networks. Responsible for training users and troubleshooting software, hardware, and networks. Helped design Austin High's technology plan. Member Austin High Technology Committee. Co-designer and former Webmaster of Austin High's web site. Also wrote documentation for various tasks such as image scanning and presentation setup.

1993 - September 2000: Self employed computer consultant. Duties include setting up computers, software, networks, and peripherals; modifying and establishing configurations; troubleshooting problems with software, hardware, and networks; teaching/training in the use of systems once set up or fixed; advising clients on software and hardware purchases; and designing and maintaining web sites.

Operating a variety of software packages including: Microsoft Office, OpenOffice, the GIMP, Netscape, OmniWeb, Mozilla, Firefox, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Word Perfect, AutoCAD, Photoshop, GraphicConverter, PageMaker, e-mail client software, file compression utilities, ftp, telnet, and ssh clients, VMWare, Parallels Plesk, BBEdit, ClarisWorks (now AppleWorks), PageMill, and HyperStudio.

Repairing, installing, building, upgrading, and maintaining many kinds of hardware such as: Macintosh systems and clones thereof, x86/x64-based PCs (Intel, AMD, etc.), and Apple IIs.
