Work

I've recently stopped working for International Studies Abroad as system/network administrator (after just over four years). Right before that, I worked for Mach 10 Hosting. They were a web hosting provider in Austin, Texas where I was one of two system administrators in charge of a set of about 180 Linux machines.

Previously, I worked for Texas Information Services (TxIS) as a Senior Network Analyst. I still do some consulting with TxIS during the weekends. As a consultant I do many things, largely Linux-related, ranging from web/ftp/mail/shell server administration to firewall setup and administration to wide-area networking infrastructure for point-of-sale operations. I have also been involved in the creation and administration of the Novell Netware networks at Austin High School and Travis High School.

Prior to that, I was employed as a Test Technician in Dell's Linux Solutions team. I worked with RedHat Linux on Dell's complete PowerEdge server line of hardware including pre-production hardware based on Intel's IA-32 (x86) and IA-64 (Itanium) architectures.

Prior to work at Dell, I was the Network Systems Administrator for Travis High School, and prior to that I did work with TxIS similar to the consulting I described earlier.

I have also done private consulting which I started in late 1992 so that I could afford to buy a new computer. Via my private business I did Macintosh, Windows, DOS, and Linux consulting, though not on the scale of some of the TxIS projects. I also had the occasional web design project or network setup request.

Volunteer

My volunteer work has diminished recently, but I was involved in PFLAG/Austin, the Austin chapter of Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays. At the moment I provide hosting for their website. I have also done a bit of volunteer work for Equality Texas (formerly LGRL), though I've been missing their usual volunteer day lately.

I originally became involved with PFLAG after I came out to the "world." This was in late May 1996 (I had come out to my parents and brother in late October 1995). My mother and I went to meetings together until she moved back to the ranch where she grew up. During this time I was also involved with Out Youth Austin, largely as a youth, but partially as a volunteer. With one of the adult volunteers I maintained the website, a project that is now going wonderfully in the hands of others (thanks to all who have continued the work).

Hobbies

My hobbies are rather varied. They include music, hiking, camping, jogging, Japan, computing, networking, photography, and pondering things such as politics, philosophy, and so forth. I enjoy most any type of music, to the point of surprising others with the things I have and haven't heard. And yes I do get outside once in a while... I have been camping various places around Texas (the real kind where you pack in all the things you will need, food and water included). I haven't yet been camping in Big Bend, though I have been there several times. Maybe next time... And yes, my interest in Japan does include anime, though not enough to get me to attend the UT Anime Club's weekly showings. <grin>
